Akima Brackeen
Chicago, IL
Akima Brackeen is a Bay Area-born, architectural designer, researcher and educator. Through research and design, she explores the impact, engagement, and the narratives of urban waterscapes within the built environment. She is focused on examining material culture and radical imaginaries of Black communities, in order to reveal the social, political, and ecological nuances of water access. Ongoing projects span architectural interventions, digital tools, sound, and audio archives.
She is currently an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the Illinois School of Architecture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Previously, she worked in the offices of David Baker Architects in San Francisco, California, and MASS Design in Kigali, Rwanda and was the inaugural Rowe Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, Illinois.
Brackeen holds a master of architecture from the University of Michigan, where she was awarded the Program Distinction Award, and a bachelor of science in architecture and community design from the University of San Francisco.
